Azura Edo is the first wholly project-financed IPP power plant in Nigeria, and “consists of the
construction, operation, and maintenance of a 459-megawatt, gas-fired, open-cycle power plant in the vicinity of Benin City, Edo State Nigeria Nigeria’s first independent power plant, Azura power project construction began on its site in January 2016. This was anticipated to reach completion in December 2018, seven months ahead of its scheduled date of completion – The 459 megawatts (MW) capacity comprising of three Siemens turbines each of which is capable of producing 153MW was commissioned. Azura Edo power plant has started generating electricity in Nigeria to the national grid, following the successful completion of the first-fire on one of its generation turbines.
However the inauguration process was concluded, coming seven months ahead of its scheduled date of inauguration. The testing and synchronization of the second and third turbines gas power generation plant was reportedly completed between January and March 2018, this success led to the attainment of Full Speed No Load (FSNL).
